If you are new to ServiceNow ITSM, the sheer number of modules, tables, and acronyms can feel overwhelming. This roadmap gives you a sensible order to learn them in. Work through it top to bottom and each step builds on the last.

Step 1 — Understand the platform and ITSM

Start with the big picture: what the Now Platform is, and how ITSM sits on top of it. Read What is ServiceNow ITSM?, then the ITSM modules overview so the pieces have names before you go deep.

Step 2 — Learn the ITIL vocabulary

Step 3 — Study the core modules, in this order

This sequence follows how work actually flows:

1. Incident Management — the highest-volume process; learn it first.
2. Problem Management — where recurring incidents go.
3. Change Management — how fixes reach production safely.
4. Service Catalog & Request Management — self-service ordering and fulfilment.
5. Knowledge Management — capturing and reusing solutions.

Step 4 — Learn the supporting pillars

These underpin everything above:

• CMDB & Configuration Management — the data that powers impact analysis.
• SLAs — the time commitments tracked across processes.
• Flow Designer and workflows — the automation behind fulfilment and approvals.

Step 5 — Prepare for the exam

Once the modules make sense, review the CIS-ITSM exam blueprint to see where the exam puts its weight, then drill with a free practice test. Alternate reading and practising — read a module guide, take the matching quiz, review what you missed.

A realistic timeline

• Casual (evenings/weekends): 6-8 weeks.
• Focused (a few hours daily): 3-4 weeks.
• Intensive (full-time): 1-2 weeks, if you already know the platform.

The single biggest predictor of passing is hands-on repetition, so spend more time in a developer instance and in practice tests than re-reading notes.
